The Fremont Sunday Market is a constant in Seattle. No matter the weather, the market is open for business. Offering a European shopping style with an open setting and two blocks packed with tables from nearly 200 vendors. During the warmer months, April to Oct., the vendors are located on 34th Street, and in the colder months, Nov. to March, under the Fremont Bridge.
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Sunday, the 35-year-old market gives students a chance to engage with the city and its local tradition. With bus routes going straight to the Fremont bridge, street parking and a walkable path there are numerous ways to reach the market from Seattle Pacific University. The market weekly offers pieces from all over the Seattle area and further, with repeating and new vendors.
There are no restrictions on where vendors’ goods must come from. Farms and food from across the Pacific Northwest sell at the Sunday market. Further, imported goods from across the world are sold at the market.
Recent expansions have allowed the market to extend over two blocks of the Fremont neighborhood. Vintage Coach bags, hand-made jewelry, fresh farm flowers, food trucks and garden goods are all within seconds of each other. The market has an eclectic feel, with a series of vendors lined up with various products.
Sustainability in a world full of new items can often feel out of reach. The market ensures a feeling of new goods with an old past. Aside from the second-hand shopping, the market offers upcycled works. Vendors reuse discarded materials to create new goods. Reusing scrab fabrics to create patchworked pieces- skirts, sweatshirts and tops. With several discarded items something environmentally conscious can be made. Bookish Goods carries a collection of upcycled journals, while the shop nearby, Center for Community Ceramics, sells handmade mugs.
First year Art and Design major Melia Hallenbeck is new to the Seattle area and uses her free time to explore the city.
“It seemed like the stalls never ended. There are so many options for different things to do. It is the perfect Seattle adventure for anybody looking for a mini treasure hunt while in Fremont,”
