The Student Programming and Outdoor Recreation team hosted their winter quarter tradition, the silent disco, on Friday, Jan. 9. The Y2K themed event took place in the lower Royal Brougham Pavilion.
Grace Combs, a third year nursing major at Seattle Pacific University and the STORP Supply Manager, commented on her decision on the theme as the creative force behind the event.
“I wanted silent disco to feel nostalgic and relevant to our childhood in the early to mid 2000s, so I chose to theme it as Y2K but with a nostalgic twist. I incorporated things like CD’s, sillybandz, and a radio channel of 2000s-2010s hits along with Y2K themes to get that throwback feeling that’s relevant to our generation,” Combs said.
Each academic quarter, a First Friday event is put on to foster community within the Seattle Pacific University campus, and the silent disco is a part of that series. The event featured activities such as CD painting, a prop-filled photobooth and a mocktail bar. The “silent” aspect of the event allowed for individualized engagement.
“Our guests [had] the chance to customize their listening experience by having three different radio channels available to them through the headphones,” Combs said.
Planning the silent disco has become annual for the STORP team. Combs reported that the team uses their individual creative talents to keep the tradition fresh each year.
“My experience working with the STORP team to bring this event to life has been extremely positive. We have all contributed our unique perspectives and worked together to create the vision for this event, and divided the individual tasks required to bring the event to life. I couldn’t imagine a better team,” Combs said.
The silent disco continues to bring people together and let loose as classes begin for the quarter.
“Silent disco has been a memorable running tradition at SPU and I hope to carry on that legacy with the event on Friday,” Combs said.
