The Student Programming and Outdoor Recreation team at Seattle Pacific University hosted an 80s-themed roller-skating event on Friday, Feb. 20 in the lower Brougham Pavilion. Attendees enjoyed free cookie dough, skating, games and prizes, a photobooth and several craft tables to decorate their photobooth printouts. Despite last minute complications, the event had a large turnout and approval rate.
Before the day of the event, the catering from Dick’s Burgers, which was part of the advertising on the flyers, had to be adjusted.
Brooke Vanden Berg, a third year senior environmental justice and honors major at Seattle Pacific and the publicist for STORP, discussed Dick’s cancellation.
“This one turned out to be very complex. The Dick’s fryer broke, which is just an atrocity, truly it was devastating. We found that out two nights prior,” Vanden Berg said.
Sugar and Spoon Cookie Dough was the last-minute replacement, and for students like Lily Bingham, a first year nursing major, the switch was successful.
“I was disappointed in not having Dick’s because I’ve never tried it before, but I was surprised the dessert was free, and the cookies and ice cream were so good,” Bingham said.
Students had a 30 minute time slot of skating with free light-up rental roller skates and access to the make-shift roller rink. During some of these time slots were roller skating games participants could play for prizes.
An hour into the event, the power went out. Instead of leaving, many students continued to make crafts with flashlights in the dark, skate around the rink with their light up wheels and use the photobooth, which was still functioning. After about 20 minutes, the Office of Safety and Security was able to turn the power back on.
Vanden Berg was excited to be part of bringing an event to campus that not everyone gets to participate in very often.
“I think it’s just exciting because it’s not something we always regularly do, and it’s a great opportunity to do something fun and get on our feet and move,” Vanden Berg said.
