My journey of finishing high school has come to an end, but this upcoming chapter will lead me to journey into a new city, just like when I went to Mexico years ago. This time, however, I won’t have family to receive me and show me around.

I am a first generation of a Hispanic household, which means taking this step to pursue my career away from my family will be a hard but necessary step towards my future. I’ve always been close to my family, so the distance will definitely be difficult but worth it in the long run. I’m from a town very south of Seattle called Vancouver near the border where Washington meets Oregon. I’ve lived there for most of my life, so moving to a new place is definitely very stressful and nerve-wracking, but I’m excited for what’s to come.

Although I will be on my own, this journey will help me discover myself more and grow as a person. I am thrilled to experience dorm life and get to meet new people that I can explore Seattle with.

I’ve been told Seattle is an expensive city, so money is a great concern of mine. Will I be able to find a job that will help with expenses? I hope so. But every con has a pro, and, in this case, Seattle Pacific University has a great reputation and beautiful campus. I love the scenery and nearby attractions such as the Space Needle and Pike Place Market. I’m looking forward to exploring Seattle and its surroundings, as well as living on campus.

I chose Seattle Pacific University because when I first went to visit the campus, I felt like this was the right school for me. I really liked how SPU is a Christian school, so I’m hoping this will help me grow closer to God through my faith. Meeting one of the professors for the writing program during my visit really helped with my decision of attending and choosing writing as a career.

Writing has always been my passion, and deciding to attend SPU to pursue a career in writing felt like the right choice to make for my present self and future self. It brings me an escape from reality when I need it, so I want to do the same for others and also bring joy to others from reading what I write.

My goal with pursuing writing classes is to improve my skills and be able to become an editor or author. This will help me become more social with others and be a part of or create a community with others that share the passion of literature.

I hope moving to this city and into the dorms at SPU will help me find the new ‘home’ I am looking for temporarily as I pursue my dreams. I can imagine my dorm having parts of my old home that I am leaving behind and new parts that I will obtain during my time at SPU, both having memories that I will cherish for my entire life. I’m looking forward to the years I’ll be here at SPU to continue writing more new chapters of my life, and looking back on old ones and finished chapters such as high school.
