Biden is putting America last
Troubling signs on the horizon
February 18, 2021
For the last year, Americans have been promised that the Biden presidency would be a “return to normalcy for the country”. Mainstream media outlets such as the New York Times, Washington Post, and CNN have repeated these talking points ad nauseam. It has gotten so “normal” that news outlets such as the ones previously mentioned have run articles proclaiming that the news is set to be “boring” again.
On Jan. 20, the very first day of the new, more normal administration, President Biden signed an executive order revoking the permit for the Keystone XL Pipeline. According to the Keystone XL website, and energy company TC Energy, the project would have “sustained about 11,000 U.S. jobs”. But, with millions of Americans already out of work due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Joe Biden has put another 11,000 people out of jobs with a single stroke of a pen.
In the aftermath of this executive order, opposition by Republicans was fierce. Biden’s nominee for Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg defended the decision by the administration to fire those workers in a Senate hearing last week. Buttigieg said, “we are very eager to see those workers continue to be employed in good-paying union jobs, even if it might be different ones”.
Transitioning from welding an oil pipeline to working in “new green jobs” will not happen overnight. You cannot throw people out of work and expect them to immediately transfer career paths.
President Biden and Secretary Buttigieg do not care. They are attempting to appease an ever-growing loud group of unhappy college kids and postgrads on the coasts who think the world is going to end in twelve years. Biden and Buttigieg, along with these unhappy people and their progressive allies, would like to see the elimination of fossil fuels altogether. This means higher energy prices, poorer quality utilities, higher taxes, and fewer jobs. The economic burdens of this would hurt poorer Americans disproportionately while doing little to mitigate climate change.
Moreover, the elimination of oil pipelines does nothing to reduce carbon emissions. It has the opposite effect. Revoking permits and canceling the pipeline projects will increase carbon emissions as the oil being exported from Canada will now need to travel longer distances on trucks and trains to be delivered.
Political Science major and current ASSP Senator Cade Huston has looked into this topic extensively and he agrees.
“Keystone pipeline cancellation won’t help the environment, it will just cause us to have to ship our oil from abroad, which is worse for the environment.” Huston states, “understanding the reality of the situation is more important than the aspirations.”
If this concerns you, it should. But what is next is even more alarming. On the very same day President Biden killed 11,000 high-quality jobs, he also signed another executive order instructing the Department of Homeland Security to halt deportations from the United States.
To demonstrate his allyship and solidarity with people living in the United States illegally, President Biden unveiled a bronze bust of Cesar Chavez, the famed left-wing labor union leader who led farmworker strikes in California in the 1960s and ’70s.
The Jeff Bezos-owned corporate Washington Post ran a headline about this ceremony titled “Biden Cesar Chavez Bust in the Oval Signals New Era for Latinos, Activists Hope.” This is all hilarious and ironic if you know anything about Cesar Chavez.
Cesar Chavez despised unchecked illegal immigration. He despised it because it artificially lowers the wages for American workers. He once said in a union memo, “If we can get the illegals out of California, we will win the strike overnight.”
Chavez would routinely send union workers to the border with Mexico to hunt, beat, and kidnap undocumented workers in the most horrible ways to prevent them from working in the United States. Chavez believed that unchecked illegal immigration was just another corporate stunt masquerading as a human rights issue. That stunt still continues today.
That is not to say that people who want to come to this country are bad people. They are not. I have personally been to the southern border and have traveled all across Mexico and Central America. I have heard their stories. Some of the stories have true pain. Deep pain. Actual oppression. More oppression than I, or anyone reading this, will likely ever face.
As citizens of the most prosperous and privileged country in human history, we should understand and appreciate that. The United States should, and does, accept people fleeing political persecution and repression. All persons are valuable in the eyes of God. They should be treated with dignity and respect consistent with the law and the Constitution. But, unchecked illegal immigration hurts all Americans, citizens, and non.
All of the virtue signaling and pandering by the administration aside, President Biden is putting America in danger. Because this order applies to illegal aliens who commit violent crimes, and not just to illegal aliens who come to the United States to work and overstay their visas, crime will skyrocket.
Consider the case of Fernando De Jesus Lopez-Garcia. Lopez-Garcia has been living in San Jose, California illegally for many years now. He has been arrested multiple times, been convicted of assault with a deadly weapon, and has pending charges for domestic violence. According to detainer requests issued by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Lopez-Garcia had been ordered removed from the United States. However, The State of California has repeatedly ignored these requests.
Then in November of 2020, Lopez-Garcia stabbed five people at Grace Baptist Church in San Jose. The church had been serving as a temporary shelter for the homeless during the pandemic. Two homeless people residing there were killed, while two others were injured along with a church volunteer.
If Lopez-Garcia had been deported when he was supposed to be this tragedy likely would not have happened. But, in order to not seem racist, the State of California refused to turn him over to federal authorities. And now, because of President Biden’s order, this applies to the entire nation.
In signing this executive order, the Biden administration has made one thing very clear: if you illegally enter the United States by openly flaunting our laws, and commit violent crimes when you arrive, you can stay because deporting you would uphold white supremacy.
This goes to say these positions on climate change, oil infrastructure, deportation, and illegal immigration are not mainstream. The actions the Biden administration has taken are not the moderate center-left cool hip uncle we were promised. No, the administration is actively trying to alter the fundamental basis of American liberty itself by killing jobs, permitting criminal behavior, and restructuring the economy; hard-working Americans be damned.

This, along with your article “No, America is not a racist country,” are full of terrible take after terrible take that do not adequately acknowledge the full history of oppression and systemic racism that many marginalized groups in this country have faced. As a political science major myself, I’m not naive to the fact that our leaders often make promises they cannot – whether they know it or not – and do not keep. However, particularly in the case of the undocumented person you noted in San Jose, you’re entirely guilty of the cherrypicking fallacy. Claiming that President Biden and Democratic states like California simply want to permit “criminal behavior” by being more compassionate in their immigration policies is patently false. The focus of the administration is keeping families together, incrreasing the amount of refugees and asylum seekers admitted, and creating a path to citizenship and permanent residency for nonviolent undocumented folks already in the country. Nobody is making excuses for people like Lopez-Garcia who are violent criminals; everyone wants to see them brought to the fullest extent of justice possible.

@liam i remember you. 4 years ago I remember taking an American Ethnic lit class with you. I was one of 2 Asian American students in that class when you openly said that “Japanese American internment was necessary & the right thing to do.” I remember being so shocked that anybody would have the audacity to say that out loud. I was so shocked that I choked and could speak for the rest of the class. I remember feeling shameful and most of all I remember feeling frustration. Frustration that someone who is majoring in poly sci would openly support the day Japanese Americans unrightfully lost their constitutional rights as US citizens, on the basis of their race. I’m not surprised by this mediocre article & why you wrote it. I’m just glad I got a chance to tell you to kindly go {insert word of choice here} your self on a public platform! Today is also The day of remembrance! How fitting!

Liam is speaking for the people who feel like they can’t at SPU. Conservative voices are constantly silenced yet they exist, even at SPU (shocking!). He speaks the facts and is immediately a magnet towards the hate of the loud opinionated left. Higher education was supposed to be a place for people with different backgrounds and different opinions to come together and engage in conversation on their way to higher learning. Unfortunately, as you can see in the comments, someone who speaks their mind is immediately cast away for believing something that differs from the loud liberal crowd. Whether you agree with Liam or not I wish people had the decency to engage in conversation rather than spew the hate that is observed today. Well written Liam, keep doing what you are doing.

Terrific article Liam! President Biden has truly done nothing beneficial for our country yet. I can only hope that the actions done so far are not a hint to what his next four years in office will be like. Keep up the good work and way to express a different opinion than the one expressed by many of SPU’s student body.

Everything the falcon has written I deem offensive and therefore should be removed. My feelings are more important than students pursuing the truth.

This guy shouldn’t be writing for The Falcon anymore. His words have hurt so many people over the past few weeks. I understand that journalism is supposed to be “opinionated” and “controversial” or whatever else you want to call it, but this is too much.
Opinion articles should still be respectful and kind. They’re not an excuse to blatantly slander a significant portion of the US population and probably some of SPU’s student body as well. By allowing Liam to write these offensive articles, you’re all saying that controversial, dramatic work that leads to more views and comments is more important to you than informed journalism and all of the students who’ve felt hurt by Liam’s articles. I’m disappointed in Liam and in The Falcon. Please remove him from your staff.

Can someone teach Liam how to form a cohesive argument before he writes another article? Not even commenting on the politics here, he literally didn’t substantiate most of his claims. Liam, google “logical fallacy.”

This article is lacking a number of sources, there’s a lack of direction. This article is not your best work Liam, I think the one from last week is more coherent and embodies your studies and training as a senior studying Political Science.

1. Shutting down keystone was performative at best. Biden congruently signed numerous oil drilling permits in numerous other areas in the country. All this shows is you just want to slander biden more than you want to do research.
2. You don’t support your claim about carbon dioxide with any actual evidence. You just use an argument of intuition with no support. Then you quote your conservative friend who agrees with you. Pathetic.
3. Biden is creating more camps for immigrants while you’re complaining he wants to hault deportation. Again please do any research before your write another article.
4. You ramble about one case of an immigrant with criminal history to try to prove your overgeneralization about the nature of increased immigration. When the reality is increased immigration leads to decreased wages in the short term, but large scale growth in the long term. No data suggests that criminality is increased due to immigration. In fact most immigrants that come to america commit less crime than the average citizen and only increase in criminality around the 3 generation. Meaning that if anything our system perpetuates criminality likely due to the utter lack of resources that are allotted to our poorest communities.
Your arguments are a joke. Stop making a fool of yourself.

It’s kind of crazy with all this talk about the Keystone XL pipeline you forgot to mention the incredible threat it poses to indigenous tribes and the inevitable harm it would cause them. It’s almost like you care more about theoretical jobs than actual human beings. Also love that you completely failed to provide any evidence that eliminating fossil fuels will lead to “higher energy prices, poorer quality utilities, higher taxes, and fewer jobs.” Using “economic burdens” as an excuse not to address climate change is hilariously ill-informed and outdated. I would suggest looking into environmental racism and who is really bearing the burdens of climate change because of inaction from people with your views.
I know you love your anecdotal fallacies, but the statistical evidence overwhelming reports that undocumented immigrants commit far less crimes than natural born citizens, which is why I’m assuming you failed to provide any better information. The Cato Institute does extensive research on this if you want to learn something. You can’t try to save face by saying “They should be treated with dignity and respect” and then imply that they’re all violent criminals. I would also advise you to stop using the term “illegal aliens” as it is considered dehumanizing and derogatory, which I’m sure you wouldn’t want to call someone who is valuable in the eyes of God. We are nowhere near “unchecked illegal immigration” in the US and if you knew anything about the immigration system you wouldn’t say that.
I am baffled by how many ways you are determined to be racist in your poorly written, white nationalistic articles.

This article was just complete trash. By far the worst article I’ve read through The Falcon. That pipeline was going to go through indigenous land. Do better and don’t write a dumb article like this ever.

hey anecdotal evidence about an immigrant isn’t good evidence ,,,, also please stop calling HUMANS aliens for gOd’s sake
Frank Helmstetter • Feb 18, 2021 at 1:45 pm
Liam, your words are hurting people, man. I don’t really know why you still feel a need to speak about these things when you know full well the anger and hurt it causes. Forgive me, but did you really put “God loves all people”, and “Illegal aliens” into the same, ignorant article? That’s a blatant contradiction. No loving God would advocate for the dehumanizing language of quite literally calling those seeking shelter from persecution “aliens”.
I’m all for free speech. I love that anyone is allowed to speak their mind around here, but @the Falcon, this seems more problematic and hateful than it is helpful and informative. The statistics are misused to fit a conservative narrative, the language and ideas presented are harmful to people within our SPU community (some of which aren’t documented people), and I really think we need to examine this going forward. Free speech should not be tolerated if it is speech that is deeply impacting students on our very campus.
@Liam, this article is an atrocity for more reasons than one. The biggest issue, though, is obviously the xenophobic nature of the latter half of the piece. I mean this in the most serious way possible, but do you think before you write? After all, you have to physically type out all of this, proofread it, revise it, all before sending it to the Falcon to be printed/posted.
In that time, you had multiple chances to sit with the pain you very well know your words have caused. Yet, you still decided to antagonize our student body by citing ideals that fly directly in the face of the Gospel. Is immigration a problem in the US? Yes. But perhaps you could examine our system which makes it next to impossible to achieve documented status, and advocate for revamping our system instead of advocating for deportation and ripping families apart? Regurgitating the ideas of Thomas Sowell and other brainless, conservative pundits may be able to work on those who don’t have a grasp on the realities of our immigration system, but if you take any time to challenge yourself and grow, you’ll realize the truth and maybe stop hurting so many within your own community.

Have you looked into Gargledese Theory? I think you should read up on that before you speak on behalf of our undocumented friends!

Dude…. do you see what is going on in the South right now? Climate change is clearly a big issue and not just something that “college kids on the coasts” care about. Get your head out of the sand.
Yuri Nader • Feb 18, 2021 at 9:54 am
I am confused. Did you not at all look at the mufat theory? Did you not let mufat sink in and enter you? I urge you to give mufat a chance, I do really think it would open you up more.
