The Seattle Pacific University women’s basketball team has showcased late-season resilience and competitive spirit in its closing competitions.
Over the past four games, the Falcons have faced challenging opponents yet demonstrated this resiliency consistently despite game results.
February 20: Falcons triumph over University of Alaska Fairbanks
The Falcons secured a 73-67 victory against Alaska Fairbanks. The game was neck-and-neck the whole evening, with the gap being no more than six for most of the night. After seven ties and 13 lead changes, the Falcons were down 64-63 late in the fourth quarter. A jump shot from junior forward Madison Rubino set off a 10-3 run to close the game.
Senior wing Lolo Weatherspoon was the team’s top scorer with 21 points, combining with fifth-year point guard Hunter Berine’s 20 points for 41 of SPU’s 73.
February 22: Met with defeat in Anchorage
At the end of their Alaska trip, the Falcons lost 99-51 to the University of Alaska Anchorage. Seattle Pacific led 8-6 six minutes into the first quarter, but Alaska Anchorage stole the lead with 10 straight points. Anchorage scored two 12-0 runs at the start of the second quarter and late in the third quarter, effectively pulling too far away for the Falcons to recover.
Beirne led scoring with 16 points.
February 27: Seattle Pacific faces Western Washington University
The Falcons fell 52-81 at home in Royal Brougham Pavilion to the Western Washington Vikings. It was a rough night for Seattle Pacific at the three-point arch. The Falcons shot a 37% deficit compared to WWU— 11 made three-pointers against SPU’s 2. Seattle Pacific closed the gap to 36-28 early in the fourth quarter, but the Vikings responded with nine straight and held the lead the rest of the way.
Junior guard Layne Kearns topped the Falcon’s scoreboard with 14 points.
March 1: Senior Day battle against Simon Fraser University
In their final game, the Falcons showcased a valiant effort against the Simon Fraser Red Leafs. A big night from Berine could not push the Falcons over the hump. Despite a strong comeback in the second quarter, when SPU forced a 37-37 tie, the Red Leafs escaped with an 88-79 victory.
Beirne ended her SPU career with a final game-high of 25 points.
Her time with the Falcons has spanned six seasons. After she was redshirted her first season in 2019-2020, she had an injury-shortened COVID season in the winter of 2021. Once recovered, Beirne gradually returned to action throughout the 2021-2022 season, and she spent her final season as the full-time starting point guard.
In her career, Beirne has scored 921 points, collected 402 rebounds and delivered 287 assists.
Weatherspoon has spent four years with SPU. She became a regular starter in 2024 and has consistently improved in every statistic each season since her freshman year. Weatherspoon has 550 points, 200 rebounds and 101 assists in her career.
Schuyler Berry is a two-time member of the Preseason All-GNAC team. She played in every game as a sophomore and junior and started 16 of her 17 games this winter before an injury shut down her season in January. She has scored 689 points, picked up 381 rebounds and sent 109 assists.
Peyton Bergevin transferred to SPU after four seasons at Linfield University. Due to an injury from mid-December 2024, she has seen little action with the Falcons.
