January at Seattle Pacific University is defined by students returning to campus and re-engaging in their academic and social activities as a new quarter gets underway. As winter quarter starts up, one yearly event that brings attendees together for a night of music and dancing with their friends at Royal Brougham known as the silent disco has made its yearly return.
On Friday, Jan. 10, Royal Brougham hosted an SPU First Friday, with the event being held as a silent disco. A silent disco is an event consisting of partying and dancing to music played through headphones, with every attendee wearing a pair and listening to the songs being played through them. STORP spared no expense in filling the lower gym with activities and concessions to ensure a memorable start to the quarter.
One of the most important parts of any silent disco is to bring people to party with, and this could be seen best this year. As the event began, large groups of friends arrived together to socialize and celebrate the start of a new quarter. Throughout the evening, Students danced with their friends as the glow from the headphones filled the lower gym.
A big highlight of the evening for many were the concessions. For this quarter’s First Friday, food and drinks were provided by a local favorite, Dick’s Burgers. The line to the food truck often had dozens of people all waiting for a chance to enjoy some burgers.
While the food may have been the standout of the evening, the gym itself was still filled with students dancing. By the end of the night, hoards of attendees left Royal Brougham laughing and reminiscing about the event.
Fourth-year apparel design student Isaac Johnson shared his thoughts regarding how the event unfolded.
“I thought it was a pretty solid event overall,” Johnson said. “I thought it was fun to go over there and hang out with everyone, and I think that the food was really great. I think everything just went super well and it was a lot of fun.”
Fourth-year ecology student Alex Heller also expressed his enjoyment of the event and being able to spend time with a lot of other students who also had a good time.
“It was a pretty fun event and it was cool to go and hang out with everyone,” Heller said. “There were a lot of people and it was fun to go over there and just dance with everyone and just have a lot of fun and enjoy everything that had been set up.”
With winter quarter now in full swing and students getting ready for another few months at SPU, the fun, and excitement this year’s silent disco brought to campus will hopefully be a constant throughout the school year. Fourth-year Ecology student and STORP coordinator Katie Hill gave an inside look at her reaction to student feedback from the event.
“I feel really great about the event’s outcome,” Hill said. “It is so rewarding to see students having fun and enjoying all the hard work you’ve put into the night. The Dick’s Burgers food truck was a huge hit, and students seemed to love the music and dancing the Silent Disco offered. During the event and the clean-up afterward, we tend to focus on all the positive feedback we heard and congratulate one another for another successful event.”
