Seattle Pacific University hosted the Great Northwestern Athletic Conference women’s soccer tournament at Interbay Soccer Stadium from Thursday, Nov. 14, to Saturday, Nov. 16.
Seattle Pacific placed second in the regular season GNAC standings behind Western Washington.
The Falcons played against Simon Fraser, the third seed in the bracket, in the semifinal on Thursday. The game ended with a score of 2-0 and a loss for SPU.
In the first half, SPU started strong, having most of the possession and pressure. The Falcons were disrupted when sophomore forward Kiera Scott scored Simon Fraser’s first goal of the night in the 20th minute.
At the start of the second half, both teams’ offenses were on the edge. Seattle Pacific strategically advanced through SFU’s defense by finding gaps and making accurate passes. The Red Leafs’ detailed footwork became the biggest challenge for SPU as they dominated one-on-one confrontations.
In the 77th minute, Scott scored her second goal of the match for SFU. The last minutes were spent with the Falcons’ final attempts to score until the game was called.
Head Coach Arby Busey expressed the team’s sentiment after the match.
“In the immediate, your heart [is] broken, and it was expressed as we finished up here on the field for the last time,” Busey said. “[We’re] heartbroken because we don’t get to be together on the field again tomorrow.”
The Falcons complete the 2024 season with a 9-3-7 overall record and a 7-1-6 conference record. They finished third in the overall GNAC standings.
The final match of the GNAC championship on Saturday, Nov. 16, was between Simon Fraser and Western Washington University. Simon Fraser defeated Western Washington 1-0, earning the title of the 2024 GNAC women’s soccer champions.
