Seattle is well known for its diverse music scene. Seattle Pacific University highlights this with its own online radio station, KSPU, where students of all creeds can share their music taste. From listening parties to hosting podcasts, KSPU offers many options for students to express themselves on or off the air.
Station Event Manager and sophomore music production major Oscar Warnersmith, along with Broadcast Manager and junior music production major David Diepersloot, share what new members can expect from joining KSPU.
“Most of our club members are the DJs that make up KSPU; they get an hour-long time slot whenever they choose during the week,” Diepersloot said. They don’t have to play music; they can do a little podcast; just talk.’
KSPU also operates differently than most clubs on campus.
“We’re not a traditional club, it’s not something where we have a weekly meeting,” Warnersmith said.
“It’s sort of asynchronous, almost where you’re coming in on your own time to do your radio set or you’re coming to the events where we’re all there and you see each other there,” Warnersmith said.
SPU students can expect plenty of lively and dynamic events hosted by KSPU that highlight local artists as well as the richness of the Seattle music scene.
“You could expect more live music this year; we’re planning to bring more people to do our little ‘In the Stu’ tiny desk concerts than we did last year,” Warnersmith said.
These concerts would entail musicians from campus and beyond performing their original music in the KSPU studio. They also intend on hosting listening parties around new album releases, as well as potentially hosting concerts outside of the studio.
Aside from just playing great music, KSPU is also meant to be a place of inclusion and connection to the Seattle music scene.
“KSPU, for me, was the first little community as a freshman last year,” Warnersmith said. “We’re really lucky to go to school in Seattle where there is such a rich and young music scene, and to [be able to] use the resources we have here.”
