On Saturday, September 28, the Seattle Pacific University campus will be abuzz with new and returning students settling in for the start of the fall quarter. Amidst the haze of excitement and first-week nerves, an event will take place to mark the start of a new year: a free and exclusive live concert hosted at the Royal Brougham Pavilion, open only to students, faculty and staff, with special guests Lecrae and PEABOD.
The, organized by the office of student involvement and leadership, was planned in the hopes of creating a fun and welcoming environment as the university finds its way through adversity.
“SPU right now is in a place of transition, which can feel heavy, so my biggest hope is to create an atmosphere at the concert that is light and fun in the midst of that,” said Kevin Deschler, the assistant director of OSIL. “It has been fun for me to dream the concert up, and I am excited for everyone else to experience the show.”
Headlining the concert is Lecrae, a Grammy Award-winning hip-hop artist, known for his thought-provoking lyrics and ability to blend his faith into his songs. Lecrae’s album Gravity, earned the Grammy Award for Best Gospel Album at the 55th Grammy Awards, with hit singles certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America; “Coming in Hot” (with Andy Mineo) and “I’ll Find You.”
Deschler gave a taste of what to expect from the performance.
“I’m excited to have Lecrae on campus because of how dynamic his performances are,” said Deschler. “He’s pulling out all the stops with wild lighting effects and a full dance crew.”
Accompanying him on stage is PEABOD, a rising local artist from Seattle, whose music is distinctive for its catchy beat and upbeat vibrancy, which meshes hip-hop and pop. His lighthearted approach to music with lyrical storytelling has made him stand out.
The concert is the perfect way to kick off the new school year—surrounded by your fellow Falcons, enjoying music, and celebrating the start of another chapter at SPU. Whether you are a Lecrae fan, excited to see PEABOD in action or simply looking for a night of fun and community, this event has something for everyone.
For those who are not able to make the event there is no need to worry, OSIL has more fun events planned throughout the year. First Friday is Oct. 4th and Shapadooah is returning in the spring.
For those who are, doors open at 6:30 p.m. in the Royal Brougham Pavilion, with the concert beginning at 7 p.m. Admission is free, but make sure to bring your SPU student identification card or another form of university identification to gain access to this exclusive event.
