For a new student at Seattle Pacific University, it may be daunting to explore a city as big as Seattle. Although the city may be a new change of pace for students, there are also several hidden gems within the local area. It takes time to find places you enjoy and let yourself be you, but let this guide give you a head start to your happy place.
Only a mile away from campus, you can be transported into a wildly different atmosphere. You experience the freedom of the Fremont Sunday Market, the peace of Queen Anne Avenue and the joy of the Fremont Coffee Company. You can conveniently find both food and shopping within these diverse areas.
If you are without a car this school year, that won’t stop you from exploring the areas around campus. Luckily, Seattle has a widely accessible bus system that allows you to reach the farthest parts of the city while being reliable and safe. A short commute on the 32 bus line, you can find yourself in the heart of Fremont at its iconic Sunday Market. There are over 150 vendors that sell various products like fresh honey or handmade art. If you get hungry wandering the market, you can check out the food trucks and let yourself be immersed in a variety of cultures. Sophomore Mariela Gallart-Franco enjoys the food at the market.
“My favorite is the Whateke Mexican food truck,” Gallart-Franco said.
After exploring the market, take a short walk to the Fremont Coffee Company. The taste of the coffee (or tea if you do not prefer caffeine) tied with the warmth of the shop makes the perfect day. On any given day you can expect quality drinks and pastries if you decide to get a treat (PS: The line out the door will be worth it!)
Only a few blocks away, there is more to explore! Check out the Jive Time record store and Ophelia’s Books when you want to envelop yourself into a new fantasy novel or Jimi Hendrix album. Junior Madi Stark is a frequent patron.
“The atmosphere is so cozy and welcoming. I love the old and eclectic layout,” Stark said.
If you are budgeting, no worries there either! Both stores offer friendly prices for used books and records.
Farther down the canal from Fremont, you can witness the salmon migration at the Ballard Locks. During the last two weeks of September, there is an underground museum where you can view the different types of salmon as they travel upriver to spawn. The prevalence of Coho and Silver Salmon are extremely high since this is their migration season.
The Ballard Locks is also connected to the Botanical Garden where you can let your external stressors slip away. It offers information about local flowers and trees and allows you to escape from the overwhelming feeling the city may induce.
With these recommendations, remember to embrace the change and experiences you may find yourself in. Moving into college for the first time can be stressful, but exploring outside of campus may allow you to get a much-needed break from the stress of school. Keep your eyes open to the possibility of adventure, it may surprise you what you find out about yourself and this magical city we live in!
