As Seattle Pacific University’s school year begins to close, many clubs and organizations on campus begin to wind down. However, SPU’s Filipino American Student Association is as strong as ever.
FASA is a club on campus designed to cultivate and celebrate Filipino culture. Whether through meetings, food, games or anything in between, the group and its members spend the year finding ways to bring students of all backgrounds together for fun.
Along with its meetings, FASA organizes many different events throughout the school year, such as culture-related get-togethers and events centered around celebrating members of the group. Of the final few events of the school year, FASA will be holding two, one of which is its annual Jollibee Run.
The event, which will be held on Friday, May 24, involves students arriving at the titular fast-food restaurant to spend time together and enjoy delicious meals. Second-year psychology student and FASA Publicist Evette Amurao outlined the event and the fun attendees can have.
“On Friday, May 24, FASA will be doing our quarterly Jollibee Run,” Amurao said. “We’re going to meet in the Student Union Building at 5:00 p.m. to figure out transportation, and then we’ll head to the Jollibee in Westfield Southcenter together. For those interested in coming, we also do karaoke and or get boba afterward.”
FASA has another annual tradition, which the club leaders will continue with the Jollibee Run. On Friday, May 31, FASA will hold its Golden Gardens Celebration to celebrate the end of the year and say goodbye to the departing students.
FASA Secretary and second-year nursing student Christine Mae Elayda discussed the upcoming festivities and the importance of properly saying goodbye to the senior class.
“We’ll be gathering together with potluck food and beach games, having fun before our last quarter together ends,” Elayda said. “Then we have the senior send-off, where we express our appreciation for our club seniors with many gifts and love, making their last event special.”
FASA Core Team Member and second-year psychology student Chriselle Esoy also emphasized the importance of finishing the year with an event highlighting the departing club members.
“The main point of this event is to celebrate our FASA seniors, Mikaela Cayetano and Melina Rutland,” Esoy said. “We encourage everyone coming to bring some friends.”
Though many students might expect the end of the year to be when things quiet down and eventually go dark, FASA and its members look to keep things exciting and meaningful during the last few weeks. As Elayda explained, the events FASA brings to SPU are not just for members but absolutely anyone who wants to attend.
“All these events that we’ll be doing are open for non-members as well,” Elayda said. “We welcome everyone to join us. Further information about these events will also be posted on our Instagram, so for everyone who wants to join, stay tuned on there as the dates for the events draw closer for updates.”
