A real Christian pro-life position
A response to “Saints and sinners”
May 26, 2022
As a follower of Christ and his teachings and a member of the Christian pro-life community, I do regard abortion as an inherent sin and the intentional ending of a human life. Isabella Privitera describes a so-called “common belief” for the pro-life community that if a person follows “the laws and teachings of God, they will be rewarded with the grace and prosperity of heaven.”
This is actually the exact opposite of the Christian pro-life position (or any doctrinal Christian position since the beginning of Christianity). The whole point of Christianity is that salvation is a free gift of grace from God, through Jesus, that no human being deserves or can earn. The Bible explains that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus” (Romans 3:23-24 NIV).
Christianity is like no other religion in the world in that a person cannot earn his or her way to salvation. The Old Testament shows us that no one can perfectly keep the law of God and remain holy and able to come into God’s presence. A person’s good works can never outweigh the bad ones. God is holy and we aren’t, so we require Jesus’ death on the cross as payment for our sins so that we can be reconciled with God. Salvation is an amazing gift, not one we have to earn because of “the choices one makes is on the path of righteousness” as Privitera states in her article.
Privitera concedes for the purpose of argument that abortion is morally wrong. She argues that even if abortion is a moral sin, it can’t be legally regulated because in order for people to follow God there needs to be a “voluntary choice” to follow God and his commandments.
As a thought experiment, I encourage you to read through her article again and replace the word abortion with any other moral sin you find abhorrent that injures someone else. Some examples include murder, rape, child abuse, etc. According to Privitera’s logic, if “these choices are legally made obsolete,” they are “impeding on that individual’s God-given right to free will and voluntary choice.”
Do you believe that murder, rape, or child abuse shouldn’t be illegal because that would somehow mean that an individual’s God-given rights were impeded because they didn’t have the choice to abuse children, murder or rape with no consequences? Of course not!
Abortion should be illegal because there is a separate human life inside the womb that is a unique person, a person that God knows and loves. Just like murdering a five-year-old child would be evil, so is taking the life of a child not yet born. In the Old Testament, God speaks to Jeremiah and tells him “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations” (Jeremiah 1:5 NIV). God talks about knowing Jeremiah before he was even in the womb and even the plans of his life. Certainly God knows each and every one of us the same way.
Human life starts from conception, but even those who don’t believe that can see the clear scientific evidence that a separate human being is present early in a pregnancy. A baby’s heartbeat can be detected as early as six weeks (completely distinct from the mother’s heartbeat). Technology has come so far, we now have 3D ultrasounds which show amazing details of the baby’s face, fingers, toes, etc. Babies have been born extremely prematurely (before 22 weeks) and still survived. Why are they human as soon as they are outside the mother’s body, but not while they are inside? If you moved to Antarctica, you’d still be human.
Remember the oft-quoted slogan “My body, my choice?” Exactly that — it is the baby’s body and their choice. They cannot advocate for themselves yet, so we must “speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves” (Proverbs 31:8a NIV).

You have so much empathy for fetuses and unborn babies, yet where is it for those who have to get abortions. No one wants to get an abortion, it is a choice they have to make for their livelihood.
You tell us to compare abortion to rape. What about those who were raped? The young women, even children, who were violated, should have their body permanently altered and be forced to give birth to their rapist’s child? What about mothers, who wanted to have their baby, but it was killing them? The mothers, who died or nearly died, because an abortion couldn’t be done on-time due to laws and restrictions. What about their spouses and children, who lost a wife, mother, and a future child or sibling all at once? What about those who had their fetus die in the womb? Must go through the trauma of having to continue to carry the fetus and then the pain of birth, all while known their child will never take a single breath? What about those who want a child, but cannot provide for them? Should they have to struggle a life time giving a child less than they need to survive, or be forced to send theur child into the foster system, never to see them again?
If you can’t empathize with them, what about the children that exist now?
You say “Why are they human as soon as they are outside the mother’s body” but that is the moment the child is no longer protected by Pro-Life groups. Why aren’t they fighting for the rights of the 400,000 children in foster care? Why are they all fostering and adopting these children? Why aren’t they fightung for funding for the children in underprivileged and underfunded schools and communities? Why aren’t they fighting for the children locked in cages.
Yes, a fetus can have fingers and toes and a heartbeat at six weeks, and many grow stong enough into babies (which at that point, cannot be aborted anyway). But what about children? Who have thoughts and memories and feelings? Who cry themselves to sleep at night? Who are vulnerable little people who are existing now, why not fight for fight for first?
Pro-Life lawmakers stop caring about lives the moment they’re born, and even more so when they become an adult. These are the same people that believe that adults must saves themselves. It’s their fault their homeless, their unwell, their poor. All these peoples I’ve mentioned are begging for help yet pro-life groups are silent at best and dismissive at worst.
Ifnthese lawmakers really are pro-life, why aren’t they fighting for things that prevent unwanted pregnancy from the start, sex education and contraceptives, noth statistically proven to prevent unwanted pregnancies. It was pro-life politicians who are suggesting bills that ban contraceptives
Because these laws aren’t being made because of sin and doing what is right and wrong they are only made to control women’s bodies. It’s about controlling people’s autonomy. Illegalizing abortions will not make them go away, it will only make them more dangerous and deadly.
I hate abortions. I wish they didn’t have to happen. But I’m lucky, no one is forcing me to get an abortion. I can have as many children as I want. Just as they don’t control mine, it’s not my place to control others bodies. I have my beliefs, nd others have theirs, and I should respect their lives and choices, just as they respect mine. And if you believe it is a sin, then so be it. Hate the sin, not the sinner. Believe they are damned to hell or forgive them. Just don’t control them, as they are not trying to control you.

A well written article with an excellent point made. I think a misunderstanding of those on the pro-choice side have is that the pro-life cause is simply one in which Christians (and other religious folk) try to impose their own morals upon others; but the issue of abortion is a moral problem, and not merely a Christian one. Abortion is a question of life and death, and this question is not restricted to any religion.

I was raped at 11. Abortion saved my life.

if you interpret the bible to believe that abortion is a sin, that’s perfectly acceptable and it’s up to you how you determine that! however just because somethings a sin does not mean it should be made illegal, especially in this case. bodily autonomy is the counter argument to this. no one is ever allowed to utilize my body without my permission even if the other person will die. even corpses have to have previously given permission in order to donate life saving organs. if my life or health is at risk because of a pregnancy, that baby, born or not, does not have the legal right to use my body and that sin should be handled between myself and god.

Hi Ava, just thought I might respond to some things I found problematic here.
– You are right in pointing out that though something may be a sin, it should not be made illegal by the country (as the U.S. is a country of many religions and people groups). Yet abortion is not merely a Christian debate; it deals with the life and death of the newborn, and thus is also a secular question. When talking on a legal level, the argument against abortion is secular, as there is a living human being in the womb.
– As for bodily autonomy, may I ask: how does a fetus come to be? Is it a cancer, that it forms without permission? A tumor, an unwanted organ? In the majority of circumstances, consensual sex is the reason for a fetus being there. So, should the life of the unborn be put away because of the natural “consequences” of a voluntary act between two people? From here, the debate goes on.
