MEN’S SOCCER:

Men’s soccer entered the week undefeated, having beat Sonoma State with a score of 2-1 and Chico State 1-0. They then went on to face Regis University on Sept. 16.

The Falcons handed Regis their first loss of the season with a 2-0 shutout. Senior forward Titus Grant scored his second goal of the season to give the Falcons an early lead. Senior forward Alex Mejia would later score another goal for SPU at the 65-minute mark. 

The Falcons would match up against Colorado School of Mines later in the week, who entered with a 3-2 record. 

Heavy rain soaked the pitch just shortly before kickoff, adding extra excitement for the game ahead. The first half was led by a single goal by the Falcon forward Mejia at the 34-minute mark. Meija was named the GNAC Men’s Soccer Player of the week following his two goals spread out between the games. 

Adding some cushion to their lead, senior Alden Massey would score a goal of his own 75 minutes into the game. Despite scoring two goals, Colorado School of Mines would tie the game in the remaining minutes of the game. This sent the game into overtime, where they would score one more goal to ultimately take the win, 3-2.

The Falcons suffered their first loss of the season and now hold an overall record of 3-1. Seattle Pacific will head to Hawaii next week to face Hawaii Hilo.

WOMEN’S SOCCER:

After beginning the season 2-0 with wins against Chico State (2-1) and San Francisco State (2-0), women’s soccer headed to Turlock, CA to play against Stanislaus State.

The Falcons would get off to a fast start taking a 1-0 lead in only seven minutes, thanks to sophomore forward Sophie Beadle. Beadle was set up for the shot after a corner kick put the ball near the opposing team’s goal. 

Junior forward AJ DePinto would score one more goal for SPU with a last-second header after sophomore defender Mia Mahaffey set up the shot, giving them a two-goal advantage. 

The game would end 2-0, improving the Falcon’s record to 3-0. Women’s soccer will be back at home for two games where they will face Montana State Billings and Northwest Nazarene after being on the road for three straight games.

VOLLEYBALL: 

On Thursday, Sept. 16, the Falcons played Northwest Nazarene, where they won three sets to one. During the match, fifth-year outside hitter Maddie Batiste gained the most kills for SPU with 17. Senior Erin Gould was very close to matching Batisite but was only two kills short, having 15. This was the Falcon’s first conference win of the season. 

Volleyball kept things on the right track, continuing their success with a 3-1 win against Central Washington. Both sophomore middle blocker Hannah Hair and Batiste had 12 kills for SPU. 

After opening the season with three straight losses, SPU won the last six games, giving them an overall record of 6-3 (2-0 in conference). The Falcons hope to continue their success in Alaska next week, where they will match up against Alaska Fairbanks and Alaska Anchorage.

CROSS COUNTRY:

Men’s and women’s cross country both participated in the Pacific Lutheran University Open this week in Tacoma, WA. Both teams placed fifth place in terms of points. Sophomore Annika Esvelt won her first collegiate event in the women’s 6k race. This was only her second race for SPU cross country. Sophomore Ellie Rising placed within the top three finishers of the race as she took home third place. 

On the men’s team, senior Colin Boutin placed 11th in the 8k race. His 11th place ranking led the Falcons to be the fifth overall team at the meet. Sophomore Brennan LeBlanc also finished within the top 20 racers as he took 17th place. The Falcons will have a couple of weeks off in preparation for the Chambers Creek College Open on Oct. 2 in University Place, WA.
